Dan Redman’s father in-law, 4th generation farmer David Abbey, has a twenty acre vineyard on his sheep and cattle grazing property in Coonawarra. This property was originally one of the first surveyed allotments purchased from the original settlers, subdivided and sold by the government for one guinea an acre to form the closer settlement, hence The First Divide.

Here's what some of the critics had to say:

“This stylish single vineyard 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon is poised with a beautifully formed core of blackcurrant, graphite and dried herbs with a finely woven seam of French oak. Tight and firm with a juicy core of fruit and dense powdery tannins superbly balanced and driving a seriously long finish. An excellent inaugural vintage.” 95/100, Angus Hughson, WinePilot, August 2024

"This is a fabulous Cabernet and one I could kick back with very happily. Generous fruit is met with plenty of personality and draws you closer. The last of its kind, The First Divide from Redman Wines signs off in style. Pour me another and make it large.” 94/100, Q Wine Review

Being a club members-only release early in 2025, we visited the cellar door enroute from Adelaide to Geelong in March to discover The First Divide Cabernet wasn't available for tasting. However, after a fascinating discussion with Mal, I bought a 6-pack which resulted in a bottle being opened on the spot. What an interesting wine it turned out to be, notable for its unique hint of eucalyptus which, according to Mal, is a legacy of the First Divide vineyard remote from the main Redman holdings, closer to Penola and surrounded by a stand of large eucalypts. We enjoyed the first bottle so much, we bought a second case before we left, have since bought a 3rd one and thinking about 2 or 3 more while stocks last! Mal says there will never be another wine from the now the First Divide vineyard because it has now been converted to "other agriculture" purposes.
